One of the biggest barriers to participation in sport worldwide is the cost (especially the cost of equipment). But what if sporting equipment didn’t have to break the bank? Decathlon is breaking barriers and improving quality of life all around the world by making sport accessible to more and more people. Decathlon sells affordable sporting equipment for over 60 sports. Decathlon manufactures all of its own brands, this means they are able to keep their costs and prices low. Affordable sporting equipment also means that sporting equipment is accessible to more budgets. Decathlon is fairly new to Canada but it is slowly gaining the love and support of the Canadian market.
As a hiking and camping enthusiast, it is important to me that as many people as possible are able to experience the connection to nature offered by outdoor activities such as multi-day hiking and camping trips.
These activities are sometimes inaccessible to those of lower socioeconomic status because of the cost of the gear. Decathlon is making outdoor gear more affordable and accessible for people of all incomes. You can check out all their outdoor equipment here and I have listed a few of my favourite affordable hiking and camping gear :
“Gore Tex” Rain Jackets
An essential for any multi day hiking and camping trip is a good rain jacket that you can trust to keep you warm and dry in any amount of rain. The gold standard in waterproof jackets among multi day hikers and campers are Gore Tex jackets. Brands like Arkteyek and Patagonia sell their Gore Tex jackets for upwards of $600. However, Decathlon has developed their own technology that is just as effective as GoreTex at a fraction of the cost. My favorite waterproof jacket at Decathlon is the QUECHUA MH 500 hiking jacket. This jacket features waterproof material (not coating) that will keep you dry no matter what. As well, because the material itself is waterproof (as opposed to just a water proof coating), you can throw it in the washer and dryer without fear of damaging the waterproofing. This jacket will run you $120CAD which is a pretty good deal considering it is durable and bound to last just as long as a $600 rain jacket.
Hiking boots:
Another way Decathlon is making outdoor activities more accessible to everyone is by offering a variety of hiking boots at a wide range of price points. The lowest priced hiking boots at Decathlon are still high quality boots that offer good traction and support.
Pictured below are the Quechua NH100 Mid Hiking Shoes, you can find them online here for only $25.
Tents:
Tents are one of the main pieces of camping equipment that make the activity inaccessible because of the price tag on most good quality tents. However, Decathlon offers affordable tents that are good quality starting at just $50. Check out this 2 person $50 tent online here
Decathlon is making outdoor activities more accessible to everyone by offering outdoor gear at prices that are affordable to all budgets. If you live in Ontario or Quebec and have been thinking about going on a camping or hiking trip, or you just need new sporting equipment, go check out your local Decathlon! (post not sponsored lol)
